Many authors have likened buildings to books, suggesting that their walls tell the stories of the relationships they enable or inhibit. This lecture will delve into buildings as windows into history.
Through the introduction of a few building types – such as museums and libraries — we will point to societal shifts by looking at how buildings respond to changing times and places. We will make sure to land on a few local examples in Cambridge and the Waterloo region, touching on timely topics such as sustainability, inclusivity and the public realm more generally.

Anne Bordeleau is O'Donovan Director at the School of Architecture of the University of Waterloo. An architect and historian deeply interested in time and memory, she studies the temporal and mnemonic dimensions of materials, drawings, maps, buildings, and architecture more generally. Her publications include numerous articles as well as a monograph, Charles Robert Cockerell, Architect in Time: Reflections Around Anachronistic Drawings (Ashgate, 2014), and the co-authored book and exhibition, The Evidence Room (New Jewish Press), commissioned for the 2016 Venice Biennale. She is interested in architecture as a cultural act, a commitment that informs her research as much as her approach to education.
Cambridge Third Age Learning (CTAL) is a movement that encourages learning and discovery experiences for those in the "third age"--the stage in one's life beyond full-time employment.
