The Story of the Grand River Community Quilt:
On July 12, 2023 the Grand River Community Play Project held a workshop kicking off the Grand River Community Quilt project. Gathering in our space, beside our floor to ceiling windows and a spectacular view of the Grand River was the perfect headwater to this amazing partnership with the Canadian Center for Rural Creativity -and the Voice of the River. That day high school students, elders, folks from different cultures – all of us neighbours, gathered together. Stories got told, poems were recited, art was built, quilts were discussed, images were shown, and music was played. The ease of the event was about love of place, a desire to be together to share stories, and to work toward being a better community member, not only with each other, but to one of our most vital relations, the Grand River.
The dream child of artist Pat Flood the Grand River Community Quilt has rolled along from there from there. More than just a gorgeous artifact celebrating our beautiful river, each square has a story to tell, and collectively they form a cozy reflection of our past, our neighbors, our stories.
But we aren’t done yet! Want to participate? Contact Pat Flood at pflood@uoguelph.ca
Want to make a day of it?
The Grand River Community Play Project is in town! Stop by any Cambridge Public Library space to create a dragonfly pin. View the Community Quilt at our Old Post Office location. Pack a picnic or stop by one of our Main Street Closure restaurants and join us on the Main Street Closure for the Community Picnic and Ukulele Concert - where kids can do activities and make a street puppet for the processional. Then head over to the Main Street Bridge, and watch the Ancient Mariners Canoe Parade and wave the processional down water street - or better yet, join in with your street puppet and be part of the magic. Wrap it all up by joining your neighbors and watching the Voice of The River (link) at Mill Race Park.
