LGBTQ2S+-identifying individuals are invited to explore a different creative project each month in a fun and safe space.
Join us for this fun, casual program. Together we will explore a new creative project with a guest artist each month. Registration is limited to 2SLGBTQ+-identified people in Waterloo Region. This month we are exploring hand embroidery on alternative surfaces with artist Kate Jackson. No experience is necessary and all materials are provided.
About the instructor: Kate Jackson laboriously embroiders on perishable materials to investigate what it means to give love, time, and attention to what may soon expire. Her ephemeral works on leaves, flowers, food stuffs and utilitarian paper products, in their states of decay, allude to the fragility of our own bodies, the fleeting quality of human lives and specifically, those of our loved ones. Utilizing surfaces considered too weak to withstand needle and thread, Jackson points to ideas of loss, grieving, patience and ritual.
Kate is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design. She is currently Head of Multidisciplinary Studies in Craft & Design at Sheridan College and faculty in the Visual & Creative Arts Program and the Art Fundamentals Program. She has taught workshops to all ages across the country and shows her fragile embroidery in galleries internationally. Kate is also proudly queer and into boring, quiet hobbies. She is one of the founding members of the Toronto Jigsaw Puzzle Club and plans to open a Hamilton chapter soon. www.katejacksonart.com
