Have you ever wondered what your pet is doing when nobody is looking?
In this program we are going to be talking with Marlee who is a graduate student at the Univsesity of Guelph. In Marlee’s research, she wanted to see what pet cats are doing when they are let outside, by using custom-built cameras. We call them “Catcams”! They simply attach on to the cat’s collar so the camera, which is about the size and weight of a large egg, sits just below their chin.
If you think about attaching a Go Pro to your chest and then just going about your day, what would you see? You would see your daily habits: what you ate, where you went, where you slept and for how long, who you met, and all sorts of interesting things that you’ve been up to. That is what she gets to see on our Catcams…except from the point-of-view of a cat!
Marlee love cats! They have such unique personalities, goofy traits and they provide a strong, loving companionship. Yet, there is another side to cats that we don’t always like talking about – their wild side! Over the summer, our team captured thousands of hours of footage showing what cats were doing as they wandered around their neighbourhoods. So far, we have seen cats walk across roads (even busy ones), climb trees, sitting under cars (or climbing inside!), entering unknown places, and capture prey. She can’t wait to share some of this footage with you!
Be sure to have some questions ready, because there will be a live Q and A at the end of this program.
