Archaeology and Indigenous cultural landscapes in the Grand River Watershed, Ontario.
An overview of the archaeological landscape and Indigenous cultural landscape of the Grand River watershed. We will be highlighting the importance of historical documents, oral history, Indigenous involvement in the identification of Indigenous cultural heritage landscapes, and the lessons from those landscapes that have application to some of the problems we face today.
About the speaker
Gary Warrick is Professor Emeritus in Indigenous Studies, History, and Archaeology and Heritage Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University and a Senior Archaeologist with Archaeological Research Associates Ltd., Waterloo, ON. His main research areas are Huron-Wendat archaeology and Indigenous archaeology and has conducted collaborative archaeological research with several Indigenous peoples in Canada including Huron-Wendat, Six Nations of the Grand River, and the Mississaugas of the New Credit. His current research is isotopic studies of dog bones from Huron-Wendat archaeological sites, with Dr. Bonnie Glencross and Dr. Tracy Prowse. Gary is also investigating past Huron-Wendat land use in Simcoe County, Ontario.
