If you’re a doodler, this class is for you. Utilizing only running stitches (the most basic of hand sewing stitches) we will get creative and “draw” with our thread/yarn and needle.
This class is for having fun and creating pieces of art, mending or embellishing clothing. Focusing on layering stitches and exploring texture and materials we will embrace “mistakes” and embark on a meditative and mindful way to get our creative juices flowing. If you have hand-stitched anything before, you will be able to take this class. All are welcome!
In this workshop we will:
Materials List:
Something to stitch on: this can be a sweater, a shirt, a blanket or any other soft furnishing. It can be made of any type of fabric (cotton and poly blends either woven or knit would be the easiest to stitch on)
Artist Biography:
Alisa McRonald’s woven weirdos live in the ironic pop-culture paradise of a Queer GenX Feminist.
Her work is a tactile fruit salad with a soupçon of the esoteric. She has exhibited and performed both nationally and internationally and her work has been featured in publications such as: The New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar Japan, Nylon Magazine and Giant Robot Magazine. She was awarded the 2020 Best of Craft and Design Award from the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair.
In addition to maintaining her art practice in Guelph, Alisa also acts as a creative mentor and teacher/facilitator via various organizations including Art Not Shame. She unites her entrenchment in pop culture with her unparalleled sewing/sculpture/story-telling skills. She is inspired by other handmade items such as quilts and afghans for her, these items have a feeling of nostalgia and comfort to them. In addition, Alisa often uses recycled materials to lend to the nostalgic feel as well as fit with her philosophy of re-using what she has.
